Dubbed the biggest awards show of the year, Kfm 94.5 invited the people of Cape Town to vote across 30 categories for the 2022 Best of the Cape Awards. No funny business, just you choosing the Mother City’s finest. And Cape {town} Etc is adding to the gees by proudly supporting each winner.
Stay tuned: over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a full feature story on each of your favourites. Get ready to get buzzed … this is Cape Town’s ‘Best Coffee’:
Best Coffee winner: Bootlegger Coffee Company
Winner of the ‘Best Coffee’ category last year, Bootlegger is back to defend its title. The company was created in 2012 by three best friends, Pieter Bloem, De Waal Basson and Antonie Basson.

Since starting up, the gents have let Bootlegger’s beans do the talking. The brand has grown into multiple businesses all over Cape Town and Johannesburg, and is still expanding. So, you can bet on finding a banging brew in your neighbourhood.
Each store has a carefully selected line from an AC/DC song displayed in-store in neon lights – a nod to the brand’s attitude grounded in great music. Cool setting aside, Bootlegger is seriously focused on sustainability, making this win extra special.

Plants love coffee, too:
Bootlegger Coffee Company has partnered with a food waste management company, turning waste into compost. Customers can buy bags of Bootlegger topsoil, potting soil and compost made with used coffee grounds and organic food waste. For every ten bags of compost bought, Bootlegger donates one bag of compost to a community food garden. Now, that’s lekker.

Buzzed on saving the sea:
It doesn’t stop there. Buying Bootlegger doesn’t only promise a delicious cuppa (the best in Cape Town, actually). You’re buying into conscious consumption. The company is one of the first restaurants to be fully Ocean Pledge Certified. In order to receive the certification, Bootlegger adheres to a strict set of guidelines regarding single-use plastic usage in their stores.

Even the beans are green:
Sourced from Central Africa and South America, Bootlegger’s beans are 100% sustainably sourced and locally made at their micro-roastery in Woodstock. 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified, and 100% yum.

Bootlegger has a variety of blends to choose from. From dark roasts to premium espresso creations. You can buy beans, grinds, and all the bell and whistles to make your perfect cuppa at home. Their original blend is spectacular, displaying hints of toasted hazelnut, caramel and a subtle touch of dark chocolate.

We recommend getting cosy in a store near you. The baristas always add a little extra magic to your order, the food is divine, and the service is sterling (and always served with a smile). On the run? Be sure to grab a slice of toasted banana bread with your takeaway. Thank us later.
