Established in 2016 and born from a humble progression of a local farmers market’s not-so-hot hot sauce range, Johnny Hexburg with its comprehensive range of proudly South African artisanal chilli sauces has become the leader in handcrafted homemade hot sauces in Africa.

Using the hottest chillies known to the world thus far, the couple-owned home business has since expanded to making ranges of extra spicy snacks and sweets – among various other products – designed as game challenges that have quite quickly grabbed Cape Town’s attention:
One Cup Chug Challenge
Everyone loves a good chugging game, why else would it have become a stereotypical ingredient to most American High School or College themed favourite films? But when it’s hot sauce that’s being chugged instead of some type of beverage, well that’s an entire league of its own.
The One Cup Chug Challenge consists of one delicately handcrafted cup made of chocolate, and a bottle of Johnny Hexburg Carolina reaper pepper-infused hot sauce.
How the challenge works:
Pour the sauce into the chocolate cup, chug it down and wait for one minute. Fill it again, chug and wait one minute.
Now eat your hot sauce-coated chocolate cup and enjoy a three-minute burn time in which you’re not allowed to drink any form of liquid.

Chocolate Mayhem challenge
This one’s for all the chocolate-with-a-kick lovers. We are no strangers to the unusually tasty duo of chilli and chocolate, especially since a number of chocolate brands incorporate it into their ranges.
But Johnny Hexburg has taken spicy and sweet to a whole other level with this challenge by mixing the three hottest chillis in the world into three chocolate slabs: Ghost Pepper, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, and Carolina Reaper.
How the challenge works:
First eat the Ghost Pepper and strawberry chocolate bar, chew and swallow within one minute then wait for one minute without drinking.
Repeat the process with the Moruga Scorpion and toffee chocolate bar but wait for two minutes without drinking.
Finlly, move on to the Carolina Reaper and Wasabi chocolate Bar, chew and swallow within one minute and enjoy a five minute after-burn without any drinking.
Alternatively, if the Chocolate Mayhem game is a bit too spicy for one go, then try the Vulcan chocolate ladder challenge as specified in this Instagram post.

Ferno Chip Challenge 2022
Make your way down to Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay on 17 September, at 11.00 am, and see just how much heat you can take before your face starts resembling the colour of red bell peppers too.
You may end up with some cap cramps afterwards, but that’s nothing a little foetal positioning won’t fix.
But for the cash prize, trophy and world-class level bragging rights, remember that after round four it’s the last one standing that wins.

Be warned though, there’s a reason the words reaper and ghost appear in these chilli’s names.
